Coast Guards are no Pussy Cats….

Just as they were leaving...Coat Guards departing Scolamanzi

Day 3 at Oranjestad (St Eustatius): Just as we were getting the boat ready (to leave the next day) and have a last quiet afternoon on deck – actually, I was half sleeping/reading in my cabin – when Coastal Guards barged onto the yacht! And were they intimidating! Coming with a BLACK 12meter inflatable totally over-powered vessel (by the way …it is a state secret/ confidential how big the engines are!!)…with 4 Black guys , dressed in Black booties, Black watches, Black Performance balance bracelets, Black army clothes, Black Sunnies!! …that was enough to trigger me! No I was not scared or nerves s…I had no reason to be…it was more a matter of …you know…”what the hell are you trying to portray here?”

Well…as usual they want evidence that the yacht was not stolen and no animals or goods are illegally possessed on board! -which is fair enough…that is their jobs and a job needs to be done!…it was just the way it was done…hmm…not sure if it appeals to me,the tourist…but then again…that does not matter whatsoever! (The same rule applies to them as to customs – They Are Always Right – so shut up and smile no matter what!)

I found it slightly annoying and slightly amusing at the same time…trying to make small talk brought you nowhere…short staccato answers reveal nothing and these 25year (?) olds were on top of their 007 game and tried mighty hard to portray it!

I thought a picture would go great with this description of events and so I took one with Johann sitting next to 007/1 filling out forms and 007/2 standing behind him to make sure he does not hide anything underneath the ink line on the paper….

(Oh my… customs kept the clearance paperwork until we clear out again and … they DID NOT STAMP our Passports!!- Which resulted in an in-depth investigation for 5 minutes of all our stamps and ports of entries in the passports! In the end they trusted the Captain’s word on issuing a receipt as proof that we paid a fee to customs!)

Well…did anyone tell you that the shutter sound of a camera triggers magic response from the Coastal Guards? No?…neither did they tell me that…! Was that a circus! I was told that it is unthinkable to even attempt such an insane act!!!! (by the Captain!…I think I might have been called ” stupid ” in a nervous moment….I must have blocked that out of my short term memory wondering : Why would I do it openly in his Face if I Knew it  was wrong???…ignorance is no excuse ….) and then Agent 007/2 was right onto my case…It is illegal to take any pictures of them!!! (Yeah?? How about reading the law and my rights to me like the police normally do right at the start of the encounter?) …you know with people posting YouTube pictures and give them a bad name (does it surprise me that they want to do that???…I am already putting a blog together in my head as we speak!!) …Could I verify that the picture is deleted? (no…I did not get to that yet….and wait…now that I have done it …I will show you the printed report from my little Nikon Camera of items deleted …as proof)

He then  got distracted and was wanting to enter the cabins (with his BOOTS on!!! Well…I did remind him that he will get the mob as soon as he gets out…he acknowledged  the remark…but did not sound impressed by it.) He did ask the captain when they can sign on as crew seeing that he has half the yacht available !…

Once they were happy we have no slaves or illegal substances on board they waved the black vessel to pick them up – they did not want to do it from the steps – like we do on and off to the dinghy….in case they miss the gap and land in the water with their faces all red! Johann was asked to open a side panel for them to walk onto their boat like only 007 will demand to do!

Now…as you can imagine – that was a little bit think for me to swallow and let go…so I rekindled the picture opportunity …and thought if I can only get a glimpse of the pick-up mission ….that will do too on my blog! But….the problem was the 25year old sharp ears of 007/1 picked up the shutter sound again! Luckily for me – their boat was backing off already…I did miss a heartbeat or two for being so blatantly stupid, ignorant and daring against the law!….and got  away with a waving finger warning…

PS: Captain J distanciates him from this entry on the Website! They were only doing their jobs….granted!

  1. On you girlfriend – I would have been just as ”stupid” as you and dared to take a photo (have plenty of evidence in my albums to support my stupidity during my travels) – after all we only live once:-)

So pleased you are both still enjoying your adventure – and I am still enjoying your pics and blogs.

    Love Jan
