So all in all … it is a procedural day for us to go across to St John Island (Cruz bay) … if we leave the next morning (Sunday) at 9.30am we can get the stamps in our passports and leave on the next ferry straight back to Soper’s Hole (Tortola, BVI) . Well, with Island Time it worked slightly different! We arrived an hour after the scheduled time and another ferry just dropped off 30 people that needs to clear customs before us as well…. and so we missed the early ferry back – on a Sunday you only get 2 ferries going back – 11.30am and 4.30pm!
So we were stuck on this beautiful Island of St Johns in Cruz Bay until 4.30pm…. we found a lovely restaurant on the beach and had lunch and a beer , walked around, had a desert at SpyEye restaurant – a deep-fried (trust the Americans to deep fry it!) Kilam Pie! Absolutely delicious! Almost like a custard / melktert wrapped in phylo with cinnamon sugar covering the crispy outside!!
As I have mentioned before – my Captain always want to play it safe and go to any departure point an hour before the time – although we were only 6 people on the whole ferry coming in! Well, we were waiting in the sun for a solid hour! … and waited till we saw our red and white ferry departing from a different dock! I charged up the Customs lady (very helpful girl!) asking her to radio them and see if they could come back 20 meters and pick us up – she was adamant that was the ferry going to Soper’s Hole … the last one to leave the island for Tortola…!!
So they did – to the annoyance of the skipper and the 50 passengers! Only after we were back on track the captain of the ferry asked us where we need to go to ( a bit late to ask now… don’t think we have a choice anymore?) – and that is when we realised that we are on our way to St Thomas Island … the next US virgin island) ! They were NOT going to turn back again to drop us off – we had to do the 20min trip to St Thomas – they made the next ferry wait for us to take us back again to St John’s….and hopefully we can catch the Ferry to Tortola (that was running late!!)
Fingers crossed and 50 pairs of eyes burning into our backs!!! We made it to St T ….at that stage it started raining heavily and we were soaked by the time we were on the ferry ( that had only the two of us on board… !!?) … they dropped us off at the terminal to wait for our last hope to get back to Scolamanzi! Thank goodness the last ferry out was over an hour late!!! …
It was almost dark when we got back home … relieved and happy to have beacon and eggs for dinner and fell into bed at 8pm! Exhausted!
