Costa Blanca … Almeria… Denia … Xabia

After having spent on yet another overnight sail from Porte Banús to Almeria, we were ready for a stopover and a good sleep. Well, that was not going to happen because the Captain has a visit to the old castle and fort in America in mind! We could not anchor safely outside the marina (that was full) in Almeria and had to turn back a few miles to go to Aguadulce … a lovely little marina that was so friendly (and very reasonable price wise!) and let us dock for a few hours at the fuel dock! Happy that the boat is secure and off we went to the next town (Almeria) to go and explore! Only a taxi drive away and absolutely worth every minute we spent walking a few miles up and down cobbled stone roads … following the history till we were blistered and in serious need of sleep!

Back at the boat we had a few hours of good sleep, a meal ashore and then left at about 9.30pm to do a 2 day trek all along the Spanish coast to Dénia. For the first time since we were sailing did we come across a submarine! That was quite an amazing sight. A few very interesting vessels passed us on this stretch – from Fishing Trawlers to Mega big Cruise liners to submarines! Never a dull moment!

The coast is just wonderful at night! Although the fishing boats and trawlers with their either non-existing lights or mega big spotlights on were making life slightly more interesting (as you have to watch out for them all the time!) the traffic was not too bad and it was a wonderful motor-sail all the way! There were quite a few celebrations going on all along the coast and bon fires on several beaches (the Euro 2012 soccer was on and it was a Friday night too!) with fantastic fireworks all along the coast! Great entertainment for boring watchmen at night! We later on found the oily slick waters with no wind again on our way and were motored most of the way to Dénia. Time was the main reason we did not stop at some of the tempting places like San Jose, Cartagena, Alicante etc. … but we will be coming back to mainland Spain and will then see as much as we can!

Arriving at Dénia early in the morning and just in time for a quick shower and to be picked up by Phil’s brother where we are going to spend the day relaxing. I needed sleep more than a swimming pool and wine … but what the heck … somehow I always find energy and time for those things! 🙂

Romie and Bill have a very charming Spanish cottage on a hill just outside Xabia with a fabulous view, a garden to die for and with Romie being an artist – the artistic flair is to be seen all over the garden and house! We had one too many bottles of great Rosé wine (Vino Rosado) and a wonderful meal with a view! Great people – I am sure we will see more of them, as Johann has decided that Marina de Dénia made us such a great deal and that we will leave Scolamanzi there for the winter! Xabia is just over the hill and we will certainly find another of Vino Rosado to share with Romie and Bill when we get back!
The next day was a more relaxing one – we could get the washing done and had a wonder through town and up to a lovely old castle. The town is beautiful (fabulous fashion and more beautiful young people roaming the streets) and we have decided to leave something for next time when we get back in October!
It is only a 10-12 hour sail from here to Ibiza (San Antonio) … where we are heading to early the next morning!
